SaskTel is turning down its 3G wireless network on October 1, 2027. Since we're powered by SaskTel’s wireless network, here’s what that means for Lüm Mobile customers.

After October 1, 2027:

  • 3G devices will no longer work on SaskTel’s network
  • Devices that are not Voice over LTE (VoLTE) compatible won’t be able to make voice calls

To keep your service running smoothly, Lüm customers using a 3G or non‑VoLTE compatible device should upgrade before October 1, 2027. Moving to our 4G LTE or 5G networks will keep you connected, and you’ll get faster speeds, stronger reliability, and better overall performance.

Why is the 3G network being turned down?

Technology and customer needs have changed a lot since 3G launched back in the early 2000s. Today, most customers use devices that run on our 4G LTE or 5G networks that deliver way faster speeds, stronger reliability, and better overall performance.

Retiring 3G lets SaskTel free up that spectrum to boost capacity on the overall wireless network and support faster speeds. That means better service and a more future-ready experience for everyone in Saskatchewan.

Plus, 3G networks are being phased out around the world as devices and equipment become unsupported and harder to support. The U.S. and many other Canadian roaming partners have already started shutting down their 3G networks. That means customers still using 3G devices may already lose coverage when travelling outside the province.

How will this impact me?

For most people – not at all! If you’re already using an LTE or 5G device that is VoLTE (Voice over LTE) compatible, you’re good to go.

However, older devices that depend entirely on 3G for calling or data will stop working after the turn down. This also includes some LTE devices that are not VoLTE compatible.

Why now?

SaskTel is one of the last carriers in Canada to retire 3G. Other carriers have already announced shutdowns between 2025 and 2027.

Continuing to support 3G would take away resources from modern networks and limit improvements we can make to overall speeds, reliability, and coverage. Turning down 3G helps us deliver a faster and better experience across Saskatchewan.

Will this affect roaming outside Saskatchewan?

Yes. Canadian roaming partners are also turning down their 3G networks. Customers using 3G‑only or non‑VoLTE compatible devices may already notice coverage issues when travelling outside the province. This will continue as more networks phase out 3G.

Will there be any changes to wireless coverage in Saskatchewan?

Coverage across the province will remain very similar. Both the 4G LTE and 5G networks cover nearly identical areas as the 3G network today. If any unexpected gaps appear, SaskTel will work with its network partners to quickly fix them.
